All the King’s Men: First Orientation to Begin June 18th

All the King’s Men: First Orientation to Begin June 18th

On June 2nd, 2014 Growing Kings launched our second annual 100 Mentors in 100 Days initiative to recruit and train 100 male mentors from the Greater Birmingham Area over the next 100 days. During this time, Growing Kings looks to solidify partnerships with local community organizations and leaders to develop a pipeline of high-quality mentors for our school-based programs targeting underserved male youth in Birmingham City Schools.

Growing Kings requires mentors to complete four hours of initial orientation, as well as offers optional on-going training sessions as part of our unique blend of mentoring techniques. The initial orientation is comprised of two parts. Part one will be this Wednesday, June 18th from 5:30-7:30PM at Growing Kings’ offices in Woodlawn. The first day of training will cover general organization history and focus. Mentors will gain insight on how the Growing Kings organization operates, as well as understand what it means to be a mentor.

Part two will be held the following Saturday, June 21, 2014 at 9:00-11:00AM. On this day, volunteers will be prepped on what is to be expected of them as mentors, as well as gain an understanding of how to work with at-risk male youth.

Additional training opportunities will be offered over the course of the mentoring programs, which are held on regular school days. “These sessions allow for participation from the mentors and provides an opportunity for them to share similar or contrasting experiences they’ve encountered during their mentorship tenure,” says Growing Kings’ Volunteer Coordinator, Justin Williams. “The additional training sessions establish the foundation for fellowship among Growing Kings’ mentors,” he adds.

If you haven’t already, and are interested in becoming a mentor for the Growing Kings organization visit www.growingkings.org/allthekingsmen. The training sessions are required for all new mentors to complete prior to student engagement, as well as open to others who are interested in learning more about Growing Kings. Additional orientations will be offered throughout the course of the 100 Mentors in 100 Days campaign.

The first day of orientation is scheduled to be held on Wednesday, June 18 from 5:30-7:30PM at 1st 55th Place South, Birmingham, AL 35212 where refreshments will be served.
